I’m fed up with all the players and their fancy stuff. I want my own.

The first thought about this topic were. Cool HTML5 can stream shit so everything is fine. I wrote the frontend in HTML/Ajax/CSS and it streams the music from my backend.

The first prototype was cool. Using jPlayer as prototype, referring to a quickly prototyped backend in perl. Voila: Music from harddisc directly to my ears.

But here comes the trouble:

  • I’m bad at design. And with “bad” I mean very bad. And by “very bad” I mean terrible. So HTML/CSS and I enemies at first sight.
  • The combination HTML/CSS/JavaScript/Backend is a complex. I mean it’s not too complex for me, but it’s just complex. A new feature? No problem, just add HTML and CSS for the layout (2 files), add a little javascript (1 file) to communicate with the backend (1 another file). And everything is scattered at different directories? That’s not the way I’m gonna like it.
  • Drag&Drop in HTML? Layout stuff in HTML/CSS? Have fun!
  • Global hotkeys are nearly impossible because your player runs in the Firefox “sandbox”.

What’s the plan? Read on…
